What Happened to BeautiControl? My Journey Then—and Now

Here we are in a new chapter of my journey—one I didn’t fully expect, but one that reflects what has always mattered most to me: offering clean, high-quality skincare and cosmetics to my clients.

In 2024, TrūAura began discontinuing their clean color cosmetic line. That simply wasn’t going to work for my clients—or for me. So, once again, the search began for products I could truly trust on my own skin and confidently recommend.

One thing has remained consistent through every transition: my respect for Gary Jones as a trusted source of knowledge in skincare and cosmetic ingredients. When exploring new options, Gary mentioned a few companies committed to clean color formulations—and Crunchi stood out.

Adding Crunchi to my offerings felt like a natural progression. I’ve never been tied to a brand—I’m committed to results, integrity, and ingredients I believe in. This next step allows me to continue serving my clients with products that align with those values.

A Personal Story of Loss and Change

The closure of BeautiControl came during one of the most emotional seasons of my life.

Although the announcement was made on July 20, 2017, I was focused on caring for my elderly mother and didn’t immediately hear the news.

That same week, Jim and I were planning a quiet picnic to celebrate our 44th wedding anniversary. We coordinated with the care center to ensure Mom would be well cared for while we took a little time together.

Then, early Monday morning, everything changed.

Within an hour of my arrival, my mother passed away on July 24, 2017. It was completely unexpected—she had been joking with the nurses the evening before. It truly felt as though she had waited for us to celebrate before letting go.

The very next day, while still processing that loss, I learned that BeautiControl was closing. Just like that, both my personal world and my business shifted overnight. BeautiControl officially closed its doors on August 31, 2017.

Why BeautiControl Products Were So Loved

One of the biggest reasons I became a BeautiControl consultant was the quality of the products.

As someone with very sensitive skin, I’ve always been selective about ingredients. BeautiControl consistently delivered formulas my skin loved. Even as branding and packaging evolved over the years, the quality never wavered.

We had:

A wide variety of products
Beautiful, thoughtful packaging
Formulas that truly performed

A major force behind that success was Gary Jones, the brilliant mind leading product development.

The End of an Era

At the time of its closure, BeautiControl had:

Been in business for 35 years
Hundreds of corporate employees
400 Directors
50,000 consultants

But beyond the numbers, what I remember most are the relationships—my “spa sisters” and the friendships that continue to this day.

A New Beginning with TrūAura Beauty

As one chapter closed, another opened.

In December 2017, I qualified to become a founding consultant with TrūAura Beauty—one of only 500 selected (out of 5,000 who wanted to attend).

Thanks to the loyalty and trust of my amazing clients, I was able to step into this new opportunity with confidence. Many followed me because they trusted both my recommendations and Gary Jones’ continued innovation.

From 2018 onward, TrūAura introduced clean skincare focused on:

Prebiotics and probiotics
Supporting the skin’s microbiome
Gentle yet effective ingredients

It was incredibly rewarding to see clients fall in love with their results all over again.

Can You Still Buy BeautiControl Products?

BeautiControl products are no longer available and if you do find some, the shelf-life has since expired many years ago—but the philosophy behind them lives on.

Worried about dry skin in winter ?

Make sure to add moisture to your skin and take steps to retain that moisture.

High winds, cooler temperatures and indoor heat can quickly dry out skin. To provide your skin with all the moisture it can get:

Use a humidifier to add moisture to the air.
Avoid very hot water when showering or washing your face; it will dry out your skin.

Hydrate and heal from the inside by drinking 8-12 8oz glass of water each day

Several landlocked states —including Vermont, Utah, Minnesota, Idaho, Kentucky, and Colorado —have some of the highest melanoma rates .
Men are more likely than women to develop melanoma, except under age 45, where women are at higher risk—likely due to tanning bed usage.
Only 33% of men and 25% of women report using any sun protection.
Just 22% of men and 40% of women use sunscreen with SPF 15 or higher.
At the current rate, melanoma cases are projected to rise to 151,000 annually by 2030 —a jump from 97,000 today.
Most sobering of all: Melanoma accounts for 75% of all skin cancer deaths .

Many women (and men!) ask how to maintain a youthful appearance . While limiting direct exposure to the harsh mid-day sun, drinking plenty of water, and making sure you get the amount of sleep your body needs are some great long-term strategies, we'd like to offer up these 2 easy suggestions you can do right now.

So many times, it is the simplest tricks to keep us looking young & perky. Here are todays tips:

Let’s start with the brow. Tools: have on hand a pencil, eyebrow brush & some tweezers. Not great with pain? �� Have an ice cube handy. (Use the ice to numb the brow before you pluck.) And it is nice to finish with some Crunchi Daylight® Advanced Facial Cream .

Just take your pencil and line up your brow with the base of your nose as you can see in this illustration. If your brow goes beyond those points, that is where you want to do a little tweezing. (And ice first if you wish.) Then follow up with Crunchi Daylight® Advanced Facial Cream .

You will want to brush your brows before you shape and after. If you feel your brows needs some filling in with color, it is best to match your brow and keep it natural looking. Is your brow graying? Who Started Seasonal Color Analysis?

Munsell defined that each color has three qualities:

Hue – color such as red, orange, yellow, etc.
Value – the lightness or darkness of a color
Chroma – the saturation or brilliance of a color

In 1909 Friedrich Wilhelm Ostwald (1853-1932), published “The Color Primer” and also “The Color Atlas” during 1916-1918. These publications established the relationships between the various visual colors. He also noticed that certain color combinations looked unpleasant, while others worked well together and concluded that color harmony was all about color order.

Bernice Kentner observes in her writings that the first discoverer of the "pot of rainbow color" was, the “unsung hero of color analysis,” Robert Dorr, circa 1928. An artist born in New York, he looked at people with a new eye and discovered the beautiful difference of skin tone. His trained eye for color saw blue and gold undertones in the complexions of people.

Ms. Kentner felt that this was the beginning of what we now call Color Analysis. In its first conception, people were placed in two categories with some basic similarities for their Color Key area. Mr. Dorr named his system "Color Key". He placed people in Key 1 or Key II colors. He recognized that all of us can wear any color of the rainbow if it has enough of the blue or gold pigment added to it to harmonize with the wearer’s personal skin tone.

The other person Ms. Kentner tells us about is Suzanne Cagill (1911-1994), a gifted color analyst from San Francisco, who helped people find their best colors for thirty years. Suzanne wrote her own book on color analysis entitled “Color the Essence of You.” Her book is a treasure of beautiful pictures and terms about the seasons of color. Her name will surely go down in history as one of the pioneers of the profession.

As a consultant with her company, Ms. Kentner personally reviewed our work each year, ensuring the highest standards of expertise. CMAS is now overseen by her granddaughter. Sephora Clean Standards so I did a little research and here is what I found. Clean at Sephora means that Sephora has vetted the product lines they carry. The companies that can put products on a Sephora shelf are free from over 50 questionable ingredients including sulfates (SLS & SLES), parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, formaldehyde & more.

Sephora has given the skin care & cosmetic industry a great start, and we applaud them.

Enter some other “watchdogs” in the industry. Credo Beauty banned 2700 ingredients. They have The Credo Clean Standard – the roadmap, if you will, of restricted substances (see The Dirty List ™), best practices for ingredient sourcing and manufacturing, and definitions of commonly used industry terms.

There is also the EWG Standard . This is the Environmental Working Group that is an American activist group that specializes in research and advocacy in the areas of agricultural subsidies, toxic chemicals, drinking water pollutants, and corporate accountability. It is a nonprofit organization.

Over time, I’ve become much more intentional about what I put on my skin—and what I recommend to others. Because beauty isn’t just about appearance. It’s also about what we’re absorbing every day without even thinking about it.

That’s one of the reasons I support the work of the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, which is dedicated to helping reduce exposure to harmful ingredients in personal care products. Their mission includes educating consumers, encouraging safer industry practices, and advocating for stronger protections that support health and well-being.

What resonates with me most is their focus on prevention and awareness—helping move the beauty industry toward safer standards so women don’t have to choose between performance and peace of mind.

For me, this all comes back to the same thing I share with my clients every day: feeling confident in your beauty choices should include feeling confident about what those choices mean for your health, too.

Smarter Packaging for a Cleaner Future

I am pleased that Crunchi supports initiatives that are rethinking what happens to beauty packaging after we’re done with it.

Trend #1: Skin Minimalism

One trend in 2021 is that individuals are embracing their real skin and embracing who we are, in a word, authenticity.

Would you agree that it takes confidence to be authentic? So what is confidence? One definition I found made sense to me, “confidence is a reflection of the way that we experience ourselves in our external world.”

We want product that gives double duty, so less product means less waste as in containers & time spent in front of the mirror and much easier on our pocket book.

Funny, that in itself makes us feel good because we are also being easier on our environment. When we are doing so many good things in our choices we can embrace who we are with confidence.

Skin Care Trends: Fall 2021 through Summer 2022

I have a couple of “signs” hanging in my office. They are positive words to reflect upon, particularly if I am feeling overwhelmed with stress, making hard decisions, etc… Generally the words that “rise to the top” are the ones that I need the most for the situation being faced. Who can relate???

One sign closest to my computer is “9 Ways to Reduce Stress”. Number 3 is get enough sleep and I think it should also read, “Do your skin care before heading to bed to get enough sleep”.

It is amazing how a regular routine of microbiome-clean skin care can make all the difference in the world so you can love your glow each morning. So while reducing stress throughout the day is essential, healthy skin care & cosmetics are like the cherry on top for promoting mind & body wellness.

Mask-ne Challenge We Are Facing with COVID-19

Mask-ne? Really?

Just since March 2020 I have had the occasion to hear from my clients and individuals with whom I have chatted that they are dealing with acne on their cheeks and chin. Often it is mentioned by these individuals that they never had any trouble before with acne. The term “mask-ne” has been coined.

By way of an update on this issue folks have continued wearing a mask in 2026 for various health reasons because of the COVID virus.

Thus they continue to deal with “mask-ne”.

Of course one of the best strategies is to use Crunchi Skincare with clean ingredients and making that practice of cleansing the face two times a day, morning and night.

Dehydrated Skin & Dry Skin are NOT the Same Thing!

Dry Skin vs. Dehydrated Skin

Until now, you may have been using the term 'dehydrated' and 'dry' interchangeably when talking about your tight, dry, flaky skin. However, these two terms are actually very different when it comes to describing your skin.

“Dry skin feels tight, itchy, and irritated, and may look red, bumpy, or splotchy. If you typically have balanced skin, you may suddenly break out. Your skin-care regimen may suddenly not deliver its usual results. Truly dehydrated skin is dull, congested, and easily becomes flaky.”

Dry Skin and Dehydrated Skin are Related

Dry Skin is mainly lacking in skin lipids, which are the fatty acids that we generally refer to as our skin oils. If your skin is dry, it can feel sensitive, tight and flaky all at the same time. Dry skin can be a genetic condition, a result of aging, or related to overuse of skincare products that strip the skin of its natural oils.

Dehydrated Skin is mainly lacking water. If your skin is dehydrated, it can feel sensitive, tight and flaky and oily, all at the same time. Dehydrated skin is often a byproduct of dry skin, as the lack of skin lipids will increase transepidermal water loss (this is the water that is in the lower levels of your skin).

The two conditions, while different, are closely related. So, what can you do to help with your dry and/or dehydrated skin?

Ways to Improve Your Dry and/or Dehydrated Skin

Using moisturizer is a pretty obvious solution. What else can I do for my skin?

Use gentle cleansing products to help maintain your skin's natural oils.

Gentle is better! You can thoroughly cleanse your skin without using harsh sulfates, soaps or scrubs that leave you feeling tight and dry. This applies to everyone, even those with acne. Overusing cleansers with ingredients such as salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide can dry out your skin too much, which throws off your skin's balance and triggers further problems.
Don't get addicted to exfoliation

Too much of a good thing isn't great for your skin. For the same reasons as using cleansers that strip away all oils on your face, exfoliation disrupts your skin's barrier causing similar problems. Extra-rough exfoliants on your face can even cause micro-tears in the skin which leaves your skin susceptible to bacteria and other bad stuff that you want to keep out.
Use skincare with clean ingredients

Try using skincare with clean ingredients on your skin! Everyone has an ecosystem of living microorganisms on their skin, known as the microbiome. Using clean ingredients can help shift the composition of this ecosystem in a way that discourages the growth of bad bacteria. This is important, since many of the skin conditions people are trying to avoid are specifically related to the overgrowth of various types of bad bacteria that cause acne, eczema, etc.
